Hello all, I am having problems with remote connections using Windows Remote Desktop. A remote friend has tried to connect to one of my machines but has been unable to do so. Neither of us are up on networking, remoting etc. I understand that there is a public as well as a private IP address. I am using Windows XP Pro and Windows Server 2003. What do we have to do in order to establish a remote connection via the Remote Desktop functionality in Windows so that my friend can access control of my desktop? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We can definitely help. : )
On your network, you'll need to assign the computer your friend is trying to connect to a static IP. This will be an internal IP like 192.168.x.x. Once you've assigned it a static IP, you'll need to access the interface of your router usually through a web browser and find the port forwarding section. In the port forwarding section, you'll need to forward port 3389 to the internal IP you assigned to the computer your friend wants to gain access to. Then, go to whatismyip.com and give your friend your external IP and they should be able to connect. Let us know how it turns out. |

Hi, I'm having similar problems connecting remotely so I figured I'd post hear instead of start a very similar new thread.
I was trying to get everything to run last night and I was able to connect using other computers in my network. I just got to my work and tried by entering my ISP IP and it could not connect. I reset my router last night after I fowarded the port this was after I looked up my ISP IP. This wouldn't change the ISP IP would it? I was able to connect inside my network with the same internal IP used for the port foward. I'm guessing the only problem can be that I did not foward the port correctly (I actually just changed the IP on the port fowarding since my brother was using it for his before). Is it possible that my computer at work is not letting me connet? Or do i need to enter more than just the ISP IP (##.#.###.###)for the computer name? |

You need to assign the computer you want to connect to a static internal IP like 192.168.1.1 then forward 3389 to that IP. Go to our home page and get your IP address then try and connect from work.
If you're still not able to connect from work, they may have that outbound port blocked. Let me know if that works and if not, there might still be a way around it if your work is blocking outbound traffic. |
