I need help with a network problem… My laptop cannot assign data from my ISP after format and re-format. I’ve my modem and router (belkin56g) connected -- wireless -- for each of my 2 laptops. On the first laptop (HP HDX), Windows Vista SO, and I can connect to Internet perfectly. On the second laptop (ASUS R2H), I’ve running Windows Vista and surf in the Internet without any problems. In the last week I’ve put the Windows 7 – (Format and new installation). Everything still running well, until I can’t connect to the Internet! I can connect to my router by wireless, or internet cable, or USB NetLink - command ping “192.168.2.1” (four packets sent, four packets received) - but no Internet connection! I’ve tried too many commands, such “netsh”; “ipconfig”; “reset”; “renew”; “winsock”; install drivers; format, re-format, reinstall Windows Vista by “restore disk-recovery disk” – (new installation), where I thing the issue can be resolved, but nothing… Also I’ve tried the connection by Ethernet cable (connection to router… after modem… and USB NetLink…) – I can’t connect to Internet now. New partition, new format, XP – connected to network but… no Internet connection! Yesterday I’ve install another time my “restore disk-recovery disk”, with the option from factory (2 partitions) from Asus with Windows Vista, but the problem continues. Is all the same! I’ve tried a Wireless Pen too, but the problem is that this laptop cannot assign data from my ISP. I don’t know why? How it’s possible, after format and re-format? - My Device Manager is always OK. - Ip config: C:\>ipconfig/all Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : asusr2h Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : Belkin Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Belkin Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-1A-92-EF-ED-CE Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.120.89 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Belkin Description . . . . . . . . . . . : RCA Digital Cable Modem Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-1E-69-F1-EC-00 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.5 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : terça-feira, 10 de Novembro de 2009 13:26:19 Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : terça-feira, 19 de Janeiro de 2038 3:14:07 Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection 3: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Belkin Description . . . . . . . . . . . : ASUS USB Wireless Network Adapter Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-18-F3-D0-E3-92 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.4 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : terça-feira, 10 de Novembro de 2009 13:28:59 Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : terça-feira, 19 de Janeiro de 2038 3:14:07 C:\> Sorry for this long post and my bad English. Luckily enough, this is a laptop.
I'd take it to a place where wifi is offered and see if you can connect via that network. If you can, it's your network. If you can't, it's the laptop. We'll have to investigate further once we find these results. Sounds odd though that after a format and a reinstall that it won't connect. Since the card is named in the post below, the drivers appear to be installed correctly. |

Quick first thing that strikes me is that you have two IP addresses on the same subnet:
192.168.2.4 [ wifi ] 192.168.2.5 [ belkin ] This will confused your laptop since it will not know which one to use to access remote sites. So for testing purposes, 'disable' the Belkin connections, reboot, and lease an IP through only the WIFI (or do the opposite, disable the WIFI interface and only use one of the the wired Belkin connections). I am betting this is your problem. |

Thank's very much for Your's reply, but when I've put the first post, it's when I've linked the Wireless, Ethernet cable, and Usb to modem at the same time to show the information more simple (i thought). Logic, I've try one by one and the configuration is only the same... only show me local connection (192.168.2.1), not any data from my ISP.
Another format, another installation Vista and i can't connect to the Internet. I will try connect out my network via wireless to see what that happens, then i will post there. It's very strange... I've never saw a thing like that. Thank's |

OK, understood.
The problem you are reporting is vague enough that it would be helpful to know what is breaking where. In order for you to access remote sites the following things must be working and they are worth testing in order. If any one of these test fails the next tests will also fail. 1. Can you ping your default gateway, i.e. 192.168.2.1 (based on what you wrote earlier)? 2. Can you ping a remote host by IP address, e.g. 209.131.36.159 209.191.93.53 69.147.114.224 (These IPs belong to www.yahoo.com) 3. Can you perform DNS queries via 192.168.2.1? This is how to do it via the 'cmd' prompt in Windows and you should see similar output as this [ bold is where you supply commands]: C:\Documents and Settings\admin>nslookup DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. *** Can't find server name for address 192.168.2.1: *** Default servers are not available Default Server: UnKnown Address: 192.168.2.1 > www.yahoo.com Server: UnKnown Address: 192.168.2.1 Non-authoritative answer: Name: www-real.wa1.b.yahoo.com Addresses: 209.191.93.52, 69.147.76.15 Aliases: www.yahoo.com >exit All three things need to be working in order for you to access remote sites and if any one of these does not work it would help narrow down where things are going wrong. Hope this helps. |
