Your ISP may have your IP in sort of a static mode. Perhaps the best thing you can do at this point is to contact them and find out how IPs are assigned (static or dhcp) and we can go from there. It will also be helpful if they can tell you the lease time.

where are you manually putting in an IP?
do you have a good understanding of public vs. private IP? have a look at the link in my signature if you don't... |

To change your IP address it depends on which IP address you want to change.
If you want to change the one beginning 192.168 that's quite easy, however your other one, the one you see if you go to some websites is set by your ISP and you have to ask them to change it. To change your 192 address just type in your web browser the address to your router (if you go to the cmd prompt and type ipconfig it should be "Default Gateway"). Most of the time it's one of the following 192.168.1.1 (try first), 192.168.1.0, 192.168.15.1 From their you need to enter your username and password, if you've never changed it it should be something really simple, and should be in your router manual (if you haven't got your router manual go to linksys website and in the support section you should find it). Normally it's username: admin, password: admin or user/user. When you login to the router you should see all different settings, be careful what you play with in here as changing some of the settings can remove security off your system, or kill the internet all together. You need to find in here the settings for the DHCP server. In the DHCP settings you should have a start and end IP address you can change the last digit of the IP address and that will give you a new IP address starting range (e.g. 192.168.1.X - change X don't change anything else). Also make sure your DHCP server is enabled, if not you'll have to manually assign the IP address for each computer NB. It is not recommended to change the other parts of the IP address unless you change the routers IP address as well, and you are comfortable playing around with subnet masks. The DHCP server automatically assigns new IP addresses to the computers that are connected to the network, as long as in TCP/IP options you have IP address set to Obtain an IP address automatically. To check whether your IP address is automatic right click the network icon in the bottom right corner (make sure you get the right network icon, if using Windows XP right click the Wireless one if using Wi-Fi or the one with two computers if using Ethernet) of Windows and click Status, in the status windows click Properties, in the Connection Properties box there is a scroll box with "This connection uses the following items:", scroll down that till you see Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), double click on it. In the General tab check that Obtain an IP address automatically is ticked. After you've finished making changes click ok on all boxes, then right click on your network icon in the bottom corner and click repair. This will reset the IP address and obtain a new one from the router. |

you may have to change the mac address of your linksys to get it to grab another IP from the ISP... there is a lot of mention of that in various threads of this forum

In addition to what AboveTheLogic said, don't forget that we are, potentially, talking about two different IP Address. Your Linksys is basically acting like a client to your ISP, and your ISP is issuing the Linksys a publicly accessible IP Address.
But your computer basically doing the same thing with your Linksys. Now the Linksys is acting like the ISP, and your computer is the client. With the added note that the Linksys is issuing a private IP Address to your PC. Running ipconfig on your computer is only going to affect that private IP. Not the public one that your Linksys is getting from the ISP. |
