Ok somehow my ip got changed and now when i go to do a speed test and it tells me I am from MO when I live in NC, and I only get 800k up and 800k down when i should be getting 4 mb down and 2 mb up how do i fix this I have tryed power cycling and the ip release multiple times Last edited by fat_3; 12-17-2008 at 10:07 AM.. |

The first thing I would do is unplug your modem and plug it back in to see if your IP changes. Then check your location and download/upload speeds.
If that doesn't fix it, I'd check your DNS. If you've got malware installed on your system, that can and will sometimes change your DNS to go through their servers before hitting the internet and not your ISPs servers. Have you noticed a lot of pop ups lately? If yes, that may be a good indicator. To find your DNS, go to command prompt and put in IPCONFIG /ALL if your DNS shows 192.168.x.x, which is your router, then you're good. If not, plug the IP in here http://www.arin.net/whois/ and if it belongs to your ISP, then you're good from that standpoint....if not, you need to do a scan on your computer with AdAware, Mal-ware Bites, etc to remove the malware. If your DNS is straight and you can't find malware, I'd call your ISP. |
