Thanks to all the contributors to this thread, I was able to put together a pretty comprehensive article on how to change your IP address.....and clean up a lot of older comments here.
If you still have questions after you've read the article, please post them in this thread. Last edited by wimiadmin; 02-07-2009 at 05:42 PM. |

I wrote somewhere on here about the service I use, IP Rental. What I really like about it is that it's on a timer to automatically change my IP address, and if I don't want to wait for the timer, I can right-click the icon and change it immediately. It works really well! Plus, I've done some testing of their program and I have not received 1 single duplicate IP.. Hope it helps -

Hi,i greatly appreciate your services thank u very much.
I was trying to change my IP address but i received a notice saying 'the operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation'. What does it mean? |

Hi secrecy (unusual name, must be with the CIA or MI5, or even ddddd Microsoxx)
I've no idea what it means, I've never seen this message. However I google'd it, and found this: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...0013842AAbad1E Can you give us a little more context? Where did you see this message? In your browser? And a little more information - platform, type of connection and so on. However it appears that there are quite a number of references to this in Google and I recommend you try to hunt down the solution and let us know the result. If you're unable to determine what's wrong, com'on back and we'll see what we can do. And of course, another reader might know about this and give you an answer. Jake, not everyone will be able to change their IP address. If it didn't work after following the steps, unfortunately, you may not be able to change your IP.

I'm using Windows 7 and I am using a dynamic IP obtained from ISP, also hooked up with a router.
I used to be able to change my IP just by turning the modem off and on however that doesn't work now, I've followed the Vista steps on changing my IP, however it didn't seem to work. Is there something I'm not doing right? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

shk1...thanks for joining the forum.
Try unplugging the modem overnight and see what happens. If that doesn't work, another option would be MAC Cloning if your router offers that feature. |

It's important to remember that the IP Addresses aren't controlled by users, but by the administrators of the network to which you're connecting, whether that's an ISP or your company's I.T. department. You might be able to induce a new "lease" with a new IP Address with the steps listed here, but you also may not. That's up to the administrators.

Just wondering if I should keep it that way or change it back to the old setting('use default address') afterwards? Or would that just turn it back to the old IP? So would my IP now change more often or would it stay..? Also how would I clone it again if I wanted a new IP after? Thank you very much for the help, really appreciate it. |

If you change it back to the other MAC, it could go back to the old IP....you'll just have to play around with it and see. Some routers allow you to edit the MAC and others will just list the ones available on your network. If you change out your network card you'll get a new MAC. As for your IP changing more frequently with the new MAC....I doubt it. When an ISP assigns you an IP, it's assigned with a set lease time. Lease times vary from ISP to ISP. The only way to determine if your IP will change is to just play around with moving your MAC back to default and seeing what happens.

In a dial up situation, it may be best to just disconnect and reconnect. Dial up systems are somewhat different. However, I'm certain your modem has an identifying signature and your IP may be assigned based on that piece of information....similar to a MAC address.
