Default Remote access to D-Link EBR-2310 wired router

I allow my son to use the internet or cut him off by browsing to my wired router, logging on and filtering or unfiltering the MAC address of his PC. I noticed that there is a feature to allow remote management in the router settings which is not checked. How does this work? If I check the allow remote management feature, would I be able to log on to my router remotely and filter or unfilter his MAC address on those days when I am away on business? And if so, how would I access my router remotely?

Yes, that's exactly what its for.

You'll access the router from the internet using your external IP address and the port that is specified in your router settings.

If you are using a typical residential connection, you likely have a dynamic external IP that can change whenever.

For this reason, you will likely find a dynamic dns (DDNS) setting in there. If you set that up, you can use the dynamic dns domain name and the specified port to get to it from the outside

i.e.:

Hi R

'Above' is as correct as always. I have a dynamic name 'clanmills.homedns.org' registered with DynDNS.com, so I can find my home network from anywhere on the internet.

Please be very careful with the 'allow external admin'. Remember, if somebody breaks your router password, they can then invade your home network. I've personally never checked that box (not even for 1 second).

However, you obviously understand what the router is doing, so I'm sure you also understand the risk involved.

Thanks for your help with this. Just so I understand, if I had a static IP address, I could simply enter that into the IP address field in this screen:

But since it's dynamic, I enter the URL of my dynamic DNS name, correct? Or am I not understanding?

Thanks again.

Hi R

When you register with DynDNS.com, you get a name. It's fixed (For me it is, clanmills.homedns.org - let's say yours is relztrah.homedns.org). You get a desktop client which syncs that name with the IP address of your home network. Your IP might change frequently. If you have a static IP, it'll never change. However you'll still run the client.

Some router's provide support in their UI for DynDNS.org (my Belkin does) - however it's only for convenience. Try this recipe:

1) Go to your router and change the admin username and password. Change the name of your ADMIN account. Make it (and the password) strong (a mix of letters and symbols). Check the 'enable remote management' option.
2) Go to DynDNS.org and register a name and download and run their desktop software. Configure it.
3) Go to the public library and test it.

When things are working, you'll be able to access the router control panel from anywhere on the internet using http://relztrah.homedns.org:8080 and check that it's working.

It's impossible to test this from home - you need to get 'outside'. Or call a buddy and ask them to look for you. I'm willing to do this. I'm about to got out for a run - however I'll be home in a couple of hours. You can email directly at robin@clanmills.com and I'll give you my phone number. I'm in California.

No, that is incorrect. The IP address in that screen is the IP that the router will accept remote administration connections from. Since its set to "*", it will accept from any connection.

If you had a static IP, it would either be set in the main setup screen, or your router would be set to DHCP (automatically obtain IP) and your provider would simply ensure that you always get the same IP via DHCP.

Default What am I doing wrong?

I did all the above. Registered with DynDNS, set up an account, checked Enable Remote Management on my router, saved the settings, and when I went to the domain assigned to me by DynDNS (from work, not from another computer at home) I continue to get Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.

Any ideas?

did you put in your domain name followed by :8080?

http://yourdomain.com:8080

if that doens't work, try changing the port on your router to something like 8888 or 35495 and use that.
