Hey everybody, im new to the forum, and ill most likely have a lot of new questions.
so here is my question: I am trying to connect a d link router to a wireless internet modem, but for some reason it is'nt picking up on the internet signal ( the indicator that turns green when the router is connected to a working modem is red ). I cannot restart the modem or anything because it is on our roof, all we have is the Ethernet cord running through a hole in the wall. but when my next door neighbor brought his router over (linksy's i think), he plugged in the Ethernet cord to his router and it picked up the internet right away. so why wouldn't my router pick it up? thank you in advance. luke |

modem on roof? is it wireless Internet?
how do you normally get online? do you just plug your PC into that ethernet cable going to your roof? if so, what IP is assigned to your pc? does the IP assigned to your PC match what you get on whatismyip.om or is it something like 192.168.x.x? please give as much info as possible |

Something isn't configured correctly in the d link.
You'll need to power up the d link, connect a cat 5 cable from your laptop to the d link and hit the GUI interface to check out the settings to see what's wrong. The d link should've come with a manual to tell you how to access the interface. Usually it's something like http://192.168.x.x or whatever the IP address of the router happens to be. Did you do any initial configuration to the d link before connecting it? If not, that might be the problem. It doesn't have the necessary settings to start the wireless broadcast. |

when you plug the PC into the modem directly, does your PC's IP match that of what displays on whatismyip.com, or is it something like 192.168.x.x?
start > run > "command" (enter) > "ipconfig" (enter) -- shoul give you your PC's IP |

OK guys, im starting to think a new router is the way to go. I googled the default ip and password of my router and got onto the interface to see all the settings. I couldn't find anything that was wrong and would stop the internet from working. So earlier today i brought the router over to a friends house who has sympatico unplugged wireless internet, same thing as the internet we have but the modem is indoor. anyways i plugged in the router, then about 10 secs later plugged in the modem. and presto, the internet light turned green and it was working perfectly. took it home, and still doesn't work with our internet. So is the new router the only way to go now? any way around it? or is the router just not compatible with some internet providers?

Since you know the router works at your friends house, you've proven the router is not the problem. I'm afraid if you buy a new router then it may not work at your place either.
I'm sure there is a way to put the d link back to factory defaults. Start by reseting the router to factory defaults and go from there. |
