Virtual Private Network

This allows a remote user to connect to their work network (or other network). Once connected, it's as though you're actually in the same building as the actual network. You'll have the exact same resources at your finger tips...printers, mapped hard drives, etc.

Also, by default in Windows, it serves as your gateway to the Internet, almost like a proxy.

This option can be disabled in the connection settings, though, so only "local" traffic goes through the VPN.
