Default QoS

Quality of Service

This really comes in to play for people using VoIP (Voice over IP) such as Vonage

If you have multiple devices on your network and want to give 1 or more priority, go to the QoS section in your router if it has it available.

You can usually set this by MAC, specific port like 3389, 21, etc., or physical port on the router.

If you have a "downloader" in your family that's taking up all the bandwidth, you can put QoS in place so their computer/laptop gets a Low priority compared to everyone else. Sometimes you can even limit the max bandwidth speed.

Example, my wife loves bit torrent. I like it to, but hate the fact that my network comes to a screeching halt when she's downloading. If I need to work and she's downloading, I'll either ask her to stop until later, or enable QoS and limit the bandwidth resources she's allowed. With this enabled, she's no longer downloading at 10 million terabytes a second and I'm able to connect to my servers, this forum, etc. to get work done.
