I did a test this morning from my Yahoo account sent via the web to my Gmail account. When viewing the message header, about 3/4 of the way down, I see a line that says: Received: from [xx.xx.xx.xx] by web55704.mail.re3.yahoo.com via HTTP; The IP in brackets is my home IP address. Looks like the originating IP can be traced in Yahoo mail. |

The results of the IP Lookups are sometimes not very accurate. The best possible asnwer you'll get is the city location of the IP and sometimes that is not always accurate.
Doing an IP WHOIS should give you the ISP of the person sending the email. Hopefully in your case, it'll be a local ISP and not someone like AOL where they serve countries all over the world. You should be able to put the IP Lookup data and the IP WHOIS data together and come up with a pretty good idea of where the email is coming from. |
