Default Sending e-mail to an ip address

Hi all!
new here
I have a simple question I think is it possible to send an e-mail to an ip address without knowing the peoples e-mail address? and if so how?
A friend of mine told me this was possible but did not explain how
thank you

this sounds impossible

maybe if you have already received an email from this person and need to match the IP to an address, it would be possible

but even then, you are sending the email to an email address

Well sort of.

I suppose you could do something like user@66.102.7.83 which equates to user@gmail.com

However, I believe the mail server would be set to look at the entire address before it delivered to the appropriate user.

I'm sure you've got more than one email address....if you don't, go to gmail or yahoo and create one then test it out. It'll either work or it won't.

Just to reiterate what WIMIAdmin said, there's no reason this can't work. Of course, there has to be an SMTP server on the receiving end to receive the email (and to know what to do with it). But if the SMTP server at that IP address has a user account that matches the "TO" that you set, then it should deliver.

You guys assume that we have the IP of the server in this case. I read the question as if you have the IP of the person you want to send an email to.

Good catch ATL. Yeah...you're right then. Probably impossible to send an email to just any IP address.

True dat.

But if there's an SMTP server at that IP address, regardless, plus a matching mailbox account, then it'll get received.

I'm wondering in that scenario if it still won't. I'm thinking the domain name needs to be one that is accepted by the mail server for it to be delivered. Maybe some tests are in order. Of course, it could depend on the type of SMTP server we are talking about here.

Fair point, but I don't think that's universal. POP3, by itself would simply forward the message, and it's up to the SMTP server (if one exists) on the other end to decide the validity of message/recipient. Of course, there *are* security and protective applications and add-ons that might step in and wonder if the IP represents a valid destination. But I'm not aware that POP3 itself would care.

At least, that's how I understand it.

As I understand it, POP3 is just for mail retrieval from an email client, and its SMTP that handles all the transport.

Still, would be interesting to test. I'll try it sometime...

Hmm... ringing a bell. You're probably right. And it *would* be interesting.

Something has to process the email, to receive it and keep it until your email program downloads it. That's a POP3 server (basically). Unless you're running one on your PC, I don't think so.

You were probably put in the BCC field. That's going to hide recipient names from each other.
