Trace an IP

So this may be beyond the scope of this forum, but I'm just curious if anyone knows...

My laptop was recently stolen, and I was able to the IP address where the thief used my laptop. Is there any way I or the police could get a physical address from this?

Actually, you can lookup the IP at our IP Whois Lookup page and find out what ISP the IP belongs to.

You can then point the police in that direction and they can hopefully get an order for the ISP to turn over the log files for that IP address and narrow down who has your laptop.

Just by doing the IP Whois Lookup or the IP Address Lookup will only give you a city at best and not be able to narrow it down any further without ISP cooperation.
