Default IP needed

Hello,
Lately there is someone that just created a blog and he is insulting me. I think I know who the person is but I am not sure.
I would like to know the way to identify the ip of a computer so I can localize him.
Thanks a lot,
Cristina

I'm sorry to hear about this and the short answer is "the IP isn't going to help much". Sorry.

An IP address is associated with a computer, not the user of the computer. So, the only IP address you can obtain is that associated with the server on which the blog lives (not the computer from which the block is updated).

For example, Let's say I'm publishing stuff about you on clanmills.com that you don't like:

511 /home/rmills> host clanmills.com
clanmills.com has address 69.175.29.42
512 /home/rmills> host 69.175.29.42
42.29.175.69.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer cl11.justhost.com.
512 /home/rmills>

So this tells you that clanmills.com has the IP address of 69..bla..bla which is actually cl11.josthost.com (correct - it is hosted by JustHost.com).

512 /home/rmills> whois clanmills.com

----------

I've deleted a lot of stuff. This only tells you the Head Office of JustHost.com is in Fareham, GB (in England). You still have no real idea that clanmills.com is ME.

And .... Plan B ....

You can complain to JustHost.com (or Blogger or Facebook or wherever the blog is hosted). They may or may not take action. If you wrote to JustHost.com about clanmills.com they would probably do one of the following:

1) Say they are not responsible for content on their servers
2) Email me (they know clanmills.com is me)
3) Shut me down (because I'm in breach of the terms of use)
4) Report me to the Police (if I was threatening to murder you)

Remember, you might be very unhappy about what's being said, however Blogger may or may not agree. It depends on what's being said. For example, if I said on clanmills.com "I used to be married to a weirdo who liked getting up in the middle of the night to talk to strangers on internet forums", you might be a bit pissed - however it's hardly a police matter, right?

So .... Plan C .....

Write to clanmills.com and say "Please stop publishing this stuff about me". Probably won't have any effect. However it might work perfectly!

So .... Plan D ....

Write to me and say "There's somebody on clanmills.com saying nasty things about me, can you help me find this person and put an end to this?"

And .... Plan E ....

This is really a problem between two people: You and the person hurting you. Please think about how you can cause this person to reconsider their behavior. An email to the offender's family (mother, brother, boss or somebody) might be quite sufficient.

I hope you find a solution.
