Default Invalid IP address visiting my website daily

Over the past 6 months, a visitor to my website from Spring, TX has appeared on my website over 100 times. There were a lot of details that made me suspicious of this visitor. I can provide details if necesary.

Today I did a 'WhatIsMyIP' search and it shows as the IP address of the visitor from Spring, TX. The same prevails on my wife's IP address. Many other visitors to my website have shown with this Spring, TX IP address. Any ideas?

Ed, can you please PM me with the IP address(es) in question and tell me where you are actually located.

Thanks,

Thanks for the quick reply, Brian. The IP address in question is 72.191.2.85. When this IP shows as a visitor to my website, the location is Spring, TX. When I do a 'whatismyip' search the 72.191.2.85 shows as my IP. I'm in San Antonio, TX, 200 miles west of Spring,TX. My wife's IP also shows as 72.191.2.85.

In March of this year, I opened a new website. My IP at that time was 72.179.140.224. In order for this IP to not show in my statistics, I blocked it. That is, when I visit my website, it does not record in the stats of any visit I make to the site.

Yesterday, I activated this IP in order to check its validity. I then accessed my website and searched a series of pages that I could easily identify in my stats. Following this, I checked my stats on my website, and the visit was recorded with the 72.191.2.85 IP from Spring, TX. It seems to me then, that the 72.179.140.224 is still a valid IP, but is recording as the 72.191.2.85 IP. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Ok....the stats program you're using and or the web site you're visiting to get the IP location needs to have the geo database updated.

I went to www.ip2location.com and put in the 72.191.2.85 address and it shows San Antonio.

If it's showing incorrectly in your website stats program, maybe your web host can update the geo db for you.

72.179.140.224 is showing as SATX on www.ip2location.com as well.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the update on the location of 72.191.2.85, Brian. Presuming the UP does belong to me, (and me alone) why are other visitors to my website showing up with this same IP address? There are numerous posts attributed to this IP with which I had no involvement. They appear to be legitimate searches, accessing multiple pages on my website, but I have had nothing to do with their origin. Since July 1, 2008 there has been over 3000 pages accessed with this IP. My SEO company is working on it, also. I expect it's a problem with my ISP, though. I talked to them last night; the person I talked to provided 'zero' help.

Ed,

I have a feeling the "culprit" IP may be attributed to your hosting provider.

One way to test that theory is to go to www.proxify.com and then hit our site. You'll see a proxy IP address. Then....using www.proxify.com go to your site and search several pages. Review your logs. If the proxify IP doesn't show up, and the same culprit IP does show up, the culprit IP is some sort of proxy your web hosting company is using to serve up any requested data.

To keep your hosting company out of the solution since you said they weren't much help anyway, I'd install Google Analytics. It's really easy and a very thorough web analytics software.....and best of all, it's Free.

Good luck!

Brian
