Yes. Your MAC Address is unique to the device that is getting the IP address. This might be your router or network card. If you replace that device, you'll have a new MAC, therefore you should get a new IP.

You cannot just use any IP you want. Your IP must be on the same subnet as your computer and it must be unique. If you set your IP without consulting your service provider you may wind up with the same IP as another device or an IP that cannot talk on your network.
For instance, if your network is 192.168.1.X with a netmask 255.255.255.0 and your set your card to an IP of 10.24.1.6 with a netmask of 255.255.255.0 you will not be able to communicate with any IP based systems on your network. The netmask will only allow numbers from 192.168.1.1 through 192.168.1.254 to be used for machines. Note that all the numbers that match up with the 255s don't change and all the numbers that match up with the 0s do. It is more complicated than that because it is a binary map, but what I said is true as far as it goes and should help you understand about what numbers can be used. Hey Brian, maybe I should write a little tutorial on how routers use netmasks and MAC addresses to handle IP packets. What do you think? |

There are lists of "Proxy Servers" that you can find by doing a Google search. You can go to one of those sites and copy down the ip address and port number for a proxy server. Then you can go to your network connections and type in that ip address and port number. From that point forward (until you change it), your IP address would show up as the ip of the proxy server... This is a commonly known method of altering your IP.
DON'T DO IT! There are a number of proxy servers that are "Honey Pots". When you use one, the manager of the proxy will send and email to any sites that you visit and tell them that you are a fraud. If you are using a proxy to exagerate the traffic to your own site you will have your site shut down immediately. In addition, when you connect through a hackers proxy, you are giving them TOTAL access to your hard drive. It is also rumored that law enforcement agencies (Federal) run their own proxy servers. If you want to alter your IP for illegal purposes, you are knocking on "The Laws" front door and announcing that you need to be watched. You mentioned that you have tried software that is supposed to alter your IP... Scan your computer with the best anti-spyware program you can get. You are probably infected. ("superantispyware" is a great product and is free for home use.) |

In Firefox it is easy to do. Tools options, network settings. You can find anonymous proxy servers list by searching. Inter with the manual option. The easy way is to use a free IP changer like "proxy way". It will get the list for you and do it automatic. You will be given updated list when ever you wish. It really works great I tried it out here on whats my IP. I am around the world from where it said I was.

Well alright then. What you were asking was not at all what wimiadmin and I thought you were asking. You just want to appear to web servers as coming from a different IP address. We were both giving advice about actually changing your address (which you are not doing). Keep in mind that use of an http proxy uses a server in a different location to listen to your request and then make the request on your behalf (hence proxy). When they get the answer they send it on to you. So the site you are surfing sees the request from the proxy and not from you. The proxy sees everything you do. Some proxies actually use this information to spy on you. See this article "Rogue Nodes Turn Tor Anonymizer Into Eavesdropper's Paradise"
http://www.wired.com/politics/securi.../embassy_hacks Also, communications on the network come in many forms. Your proxy may not cover all of your tracks. |

From what I see "TOR" sights are volunteer only. There are also many anonymous sights out there that are safe to use with IP changing. Proxy list used generally are safe if anonymous and changed often. Do you agree?
