Hello,
I was at whatismyip.com and saw the forum post how to port forward. Clicked it, and only one post yet which may not help much. To help I registered.. or tried to. After 3 times the security question worked, appearantley Mikkey Mouse isn't from Disney (even looked up how you spell it), and I still don't know a 4 letter populair computercompany with a D. Then the submit button was disabled for some time. Anyway, after some frustration and patience it finally it worked. Then the forum, I can't edit MY OWN settings! The user control panel isn't accessible, the options not, my 'details' not, my profile not, and the user list not too. I wanted to e-mail about this, but then the contact page is disabled too! I know you are trying to block spammers (I dont see any so I think it works), but a contact address would be nice. In extreme case enter it like this: A!D$M*I)N [at] WhAtIs))my((IP [dot] com and tell the people to filter the letters out. Also editting your own profile should be allowed? I didn't see any spam, and I don't want spam too, but this many measures and disabled options are rediculous. I hope for new users it wil be improved, this way you just make them leave. -Luc. |

Hi Luc,
Thanks for your suggestions. The mouse from Disney is spelled Mickey Mouse. The popular 4 letter computer company that starts with a "D" is Dell. You're right. All of these measures are put in place to eliminate spam. I'm happy to say we've been 100% spam free for quite some time. As a newly registered member, you WILL NOT be able to edit your own settings in your profile, etc. However, after posting and becoming a verified user, all features and functions of the board will be available to you. We have many many sign ups per day that are obviously spammers and because they can't get to the PM area, nor the profile area, and their posts have to be moderated, keeps us clean and allows our users to focus on the subject at hand. If perhaps a better human verification process comes along, I'll put that in place and eliminate some of the other spam detection methods. I'd rather us not lose/deter any new users from the board. If we have to sacrifice 1 or 2 users for the sake of blocking 20 spammers and spending tons of hours manually keeping the board clean, that's an acceptable number to me. |

Even as a new user I agree. Nothing makes a forum more usless then spammers and bots. I did not even notice we could not change personal prefrences or send PMs. I signed up to this message board to do one thing, post replys or threads about what I know or would like to know, when it comes to PMs, watching other users, or changing the UI I don't think I could care any less.
