At the end of 2009, my employer was facing the reality not just that we were emerging into the view of hackers, but that our clients were starting to take an active interest in finding out what we were doing to protect ourselves. As a 30-person small company, it wasn't an easy question to answer. We were used to simple manual observation.

That wasn't good enough.

As I looked around, it became clear to me that a good, strong look at where information security was headed was showing me the need for a border security architecture that wasn't just Web filtering, or just firewalling, or just antivirus. And our ISP was not making us happy, so a router was in our future as well.

I'd looked at software like Vyatta (good, but long on configuration), and McAfee's border security, plus an iPrism from St Bernard. iPrism was just Web filtering. It fell out rather quickly, although it was a VERY good Web filter. I just needed more.

I was a few days away from asking for a quote on a McAfee <shudder> and Secure Computing (whom they'd just purchased) border security device when Palo Alto Networks popped up in my email. Palo Alto had been working on and recently released a series of appliances they call "Next Generation Firewalls."

Without turning this into a HUGE story, we tried and selected a Palo Alto PA-500. First and foremost, since we were operating through a largely hosted Internet connection, the PA had a Virtual Wire mode where it operates without IP Addresses, inline, and provides the blocking functions of a Web filter, the security rules of a firewall, and all based on on static ports, but on application signatures that Palo Alto updates as often as necessary. My PA looks for new signatures every morning right after network backups. And it's run like a champ.

But this isn't a firewall review. It's a router review, and the PA does that as well. With 6 hardware interfaces, I was able to take one pair and setup layer 3 functionality on that pair. Now, as we've switched to another ISP, I was able to move our connections to that layer 3 pair, and voila! A router!

And VPN Appliance that is tying into a RADIUS server in my LAN to provide Active Directory authentication for VPN users. By group or individually. I've fiddled a bit with the DMZ capabilities, but that comes later. For now, It's a "simple" border router with SSL VPN, and all the antivirus, IPS/IDS, and app vulnerability monitoring that I have had from it from the start.

Including a couple of days' support from a local Palo Alto consultant, I paid about US$8000, and I'll pay about US$1000 for annual maintenance. And I could not be happier. I've got reporting, monitoring, routing, antivirus, web filtering, and all of it without any measurable impact on throughput. It's even prepared to replace a Juniper IPSec tunnel appliance if I can convince the other office to let us try it.

The only blip, and I'm not all that put off by it, is that it can take about 24 hours to get a response if you submit a support ticket via their Web page. If they could shorten that just a little, to within 8 business hours, It would be an "all 5's" router, firewall, and all around security appliance.

So far, this things has simply run, and run well.

I'm trying to set up my router in order to use Bit Torrent, but ever since I reset my router (just turned it off and on), it has been a problem. In my router settings, I used "Use Static IP Address" and "Use These DNS Servers". I put the numbers that I found on the command prompt. After I entered in those numbers, I can't access the web, but if I click on "Get Dynamically From ISP" in both "Internet IP Address" and "Domain Name Server (DNS) Address" then I am able to visit websites easily.

I tried many methods on trying to fix this problem such as ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew. I've done the "Use the following IP address" and "Use the following DNS server addresses" under the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

I've just exposed a hacker on one of our customers servers. Weird experience. He was trying to set up a service for a poker-site. The server has almost no communication externally, but a little while before the attack, Internet Explorer was used to lookup the IP address on WIMI. Is there any chance, that WIMI could be used by criminals to get information on ip-addresses, that are "relevant subject for attack"?

Guess they got a we bit ticked off. the memo said we were suspended. I didn't know my wife tried to log in under another email so what might have been temporary went permanent. I told my wife she had two options, buy a new puter or replace a few parts and fire our ISP. We can easily sign up under another ISP however we need to change the MAC address. can anyone tell me what the part is called so when I go to the puter store I can tell them or choose what I need. Thanks Ed

Hello All...
- I'm a new girl so please be gentle with me - lol... my question is very 'noob' so I'm sure you can help me work this out - thank you in advance :)

This is a question relating to possibly being ripped off in my business, so its really important as I'm only a small/new business and can't afford the problems of fraud.

If the first 3 areas of an ip was say:

123.123.123.....

- and my last 2 was say 12
- could somebody else be 23 ??

So...
if I'm 123.123.123.12 is it likely
that 123.123.123.40 is a completely different
and 123.123.123.102 is yet another
address or is it likely to be the same address?

Does that make sense?

Many thanks
